"Never work with children..." W.C. Fields

In one of her uni communications courses, C had a photo project to do of creating a magazine for women. I volunteered to take the photos. (I'm such a good mom) The photo shoot  was going really well until someone had the idea to include a 1950's perfect housewife shot. So out came the chicken (tonight's supper), a 1950's dress, an apron, the feather duster and, since K was over, Binky was a perfect prop. Charming.

Adding again

Bought a $1 book today mostly to destroy, rip apart, alter for an art project. It’s a coffee table photo book of Canada from the 1970’s but it has the sweetest hand-written dedication in the front that now maybe I can’t bring myself to repurpose the book. Here it is:Tony and Ruth,I thought by now you might appreciate this book a little more, (the white stuff is snow)This is actually a wedding gift but I’ll say Merry Christmas too since it’s the season. Wish I could have delivered it personally but such was not the case this year. (maybe next)Till next timeDonSpent a nice few minutes imagining who Tony and Ruth were, how they didn’t understand snow, did Don see them next time and if I had a publishing house I’d probably call it Umschau Verlag Breidenstein KG too. Actually couldn’t think of anything better. Reminds me of a love poem I wrote about spies in white coats with thin moustaches and blood on their hands who turned into a white sofa bred on a sofa farm by fat-bottomed sofa farmers with 10 polite children. (you had to be there).x

November at the cabin

If you leave Vancouver and follow the tracks north for 200 km, if you find your way thru the little village and some private land, if you double back on the railway road, you will come to a magical place of quiet contemplation.Go sit on the bent cedar by the pond. Feel the wind move the tree.Touch the bark. Alive, warm.Hear the dragonflies swoop and buzz in the reeds, see the colours and reflections. Feel the season ending. This is the time to write, to rest, to be quiet.Out of reach of phones, radios, TVs and electricity. Those things can wait.

Here is a story from this weekend

Was sitting at the lake, (well, we call it a lake but it’s actually a small pond), with a camera, taking photos of pond life and my mother sat close by with her crossword puzzle, glass of wine and pen.Mom: “Four letters, starts with M, or could be W, philistine pursuits. What’s a Philistine?”Me: “Derogatory term for someone who doesn’t understand art, intellectual concepts...”Clickclick...click...Mom: “...someone from Palestine?”Me: click click “not necessarily” clickMom: “Do you ever hear it in conversation? ...with normal people I mean?”Me: “yes,” clickMom: “In what context did you hear it then? ...you’ll have 50 photos of the same thing if you keep this up.”Me: click...putting camera down. “ I believe the person who used the word last was criticising another person’s taste in wine.”Picking camera back up again.Click click click...... clickMom: “well, that can’t be...”Me: “why not?”Mom: “they don’t drink wine in Palestine.”Me: “hmm” ...click click clickSo I’ve come to the conclusion that trying to photograph dragonflies with a Canon Rebel is virtually impossible.

How to build a table

What to do after the glass top broke?Get some wood and some tools, tip the old base on the boards.Get C to stand on boards while K drills some holes.Screw it all down.Sand, or not.Have lunch!I bought some stain but in the end decided not to stain the boards and let them go thru a West Coast winter to weather them naturally. We love this table! We're so proud of it we've decided to chisel our signatures into the boards.

Variations on a theme

Wednesday afternoon, magic moment on the sofa.Today I’m Homegirl, happily watching my daughters figuring out the ukuleles. Some day, if my girls are ever in a band, I won’t be one of those groupie moms hanging around backstage, black nails, red lipstick, grooving coolly to the jams (what is that anyway?). I’m going to hang out at home, probably with no makeup, in my T-shirt and jeans, and wait for spontaneousness to happen.
